Terrible Cards Tuesday: 2018 Boston Red Sox catchers

The Boston Red Sox fans have a lot to be happy about.  Sunday, their team has won the Major League Baseball World Series against a tough Dodgers team.  That topped a fantastic season in which they won 108 regular season games over an equally impressive Yankees team.

So I’m going to have a little fun with them now.

The Red Sox catchers hitting cards are not what you call overwhelming.  You see the cards below taken from APBA GO (you can play with the Sox and Dodgers free through November).

  • Dan Butler receives a card for six at bats.  He gets a 66-6 despite not hitting a double.
  • Blake Swihart is the slugger of the bunch… He got three zeroes and a 15-11.  ‘Course, he’s listed as a utility player.
  • Kudos to almost-regular Sandy Leon who is rated as a Catcher-9.  However, with a 25-22 to go with his 0-6 power numbers, he doesn’t hit like Carlton.
  • Christian Vazquez rates as a Catcher-8 but his card isn’t much better with two zeroes and a 31-22.

Disclaimer:  For those who haven’t seen Terrible Tuesday (because it’s been a while), keep in mind, this is tongue-in-cheek.  As a big college baseball fan, I know what it takes to get into pro ball.  This is meant to be in fun and directed at the card not the player.

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

One Comment:

  1. Compare that to the four Sox catchers in 1967:
    Mike Ryan, .199
    Bob Tillman, .188
    Elston Howard, .147
    Russ Gibson, .203
They hit a collective .188, with 5 HR and 57 RBI. OBP: .249.
