‘61 Yankees defeat ‘31 A’s in Inagural Furniture City APBA Tournament

GF Korreck hosted a well-run inaugural Furniture City APBA Tournament. The tournament was held at Legends Sports and Games in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is a sports cards,  gaming cards, and sports memorabilia store. Eighteen managers rolled games throughout the day surrounded by beautiful memorabilia.

After eight games of pool play, eight teams made the single-elimination playoff. They included: 1948 Cleveland Indians, 1931 Philadelphia A’s, 1928 Philadelphia A’s, 1937 New York Yankees, 1970 Baltimore Orioles, 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers, 1927 New York Yankees, and the 1961 New York Yankees.

After some tight games, the Final Four was set. Making the semifinals were 1931 Philadelphia A’s, 1937 New York Yankees, 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers, and 1961 New York Yankees.

In the championship game, 1961 New York Yankees, managed by Robert Mosherat defeated the 1931 Philadelphia A’s, managed by Mark Hanisch, in an 11- inning classic.

The APBA tournament circuit continues to grow around the country. If you’ve never attended a tournament, I highly suggest it. It’s a great way to have some fun and make some new acquaintances. There were a couple of younger players in Grand Rapids today…but the community needs more young blood. Consider taking a younger person with you to manage a team or just tag along. Maybe they’ll catch the APBA bug…which will benefit the entire community.

  1. Glad to see fellow BOS manager Bob Mosher came though with the win! It looks like your predictions for the tourney were pretty much on target too, Kevin.
