Craig Christian is helping me expand my horizons a little. He suggested 2001-02 Dominik “The Dominator” Hasek for this week’s Monster Monday featured card. Craig is a big advocate of the APBA Hockey game so I’m happy to oblige. That said, I am a bit out of my wheelhouse so if I get some of the details wrong, please call me out. I haven’t played the APBA Hockey game.
With my first glance at the card, I thought “Cool! check out the 1s!”. That said, this is not atypical for a hockey goalie especially a good one like Hasek.
Here are Hasek’s stats for the 2001-02 season:
Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | Goal | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Season | Tm | GP | W | L | T/O | GA | SA | SV | SV% | GAA | SO | MIN | GA%- | GSAA | GPS |
2001-02 | DET | 65 | 41 | 15 | 8 | 140 | 1654 | 1514 | .915 | 2.17 | 5 | 3872 | 92 | 12.58 | 11.6 |
Craig thought the best way to explain the APBA hockey card is to compare to another goalie. Here is 1998-99 Ed Belfour:
It’s pretty similar to Hasek’s but there are subtle differences that escaped an APBA baseball player like me. Here is Craig’s helpful explanation:
Here is another goalie card. Pretty good one but you notice the Dominator has 5’s instead of 6’s in some spots? A five goes automatically to one of the goalies teammates after a potential goal result which is different than a normal save because dice roll didn’t fall into the shooters range. A 6 is a smothered puck with a face off in your own zone which could result in a shot right away.
It’s huge if you don’t have great face off forward.
Here is a look at part of the APBA Hockey Goalie Action Chart which puts it in perspective:
After looking this over, it made some sense to me. I asked Craig about the ‘X’ after the result. No, it does not mean a strikeout (grin). Craig says that it means time is taken off the clock.
Pretty much all my knowledge of APBA Hockey comes from Craig. During the 2017 Chicagoland APBA Baseball Tournament, he took some time to explain the game to me. As I said, he loves the game and wants to promote it in any way he can.
Thanks, Craig!
