Christmas Eve battle against Don Smith has IAL playoff implications

December 24th is going to be a big day. Okay yeah, it’s Christmas Eve. But it’s also going to be the day that decides if my Twin City Thunderchickens will make the 2019 Illowa APBA League playoffs.

One man stands in my way of that goal.

This guy…

On the 24th, my Thunderchickens will be playing the last nine-game series of the season against Don Smith’s Molly Putts Marauders. Our league’s rules dictate that the top four teams at the end of the season will advance to the playoffs. That’s an honor Twin City has not seen for over ten years!!

This year however, it is a very distinct possibility. Peruse the official November IAL standings below.

It looks like there are two races going on. One for the top spot in the race between Marc Bunch’s Upperdeckers and Don’s Marauders. As for the last two spots, they up for grabs between Rob Moore’s Highlanders, myself, and Mike Bunch’s Bombers. Even Dan Bunch and his Hustlers from Colona could sneak in if they have a big series win.

Keep in mind that this is the last series of the year. With the IAL’s strict player limitation regulation, that means all teams will be paying close attention to each at-bat and inning used.

Don and I will be playing our pivotal series (well, pivotal for me. He’s got playoffs locked up, right?) on the morning of Christmas Eve.

Santa, I need a few 66s for Christmas!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

One Comment:

  1. Do not trust this man! He sets you up to think you are going to win and then 4-5 homers later and the deficit is 7 to 9 runs, and your hearing is gone because his duck call has been going on all day.

There are few people I have come across that are like Don and he’s possibly the most entertaining manager in the league. Merry Christmas ILLOWA managers.
