Chuck Lucas sends in update to 1959 replay

imageMy friend Chuck Lucas is doing a replay of the 1959 season.  ‘Luke’ is a manager in a league I’m in, the IAL.  He’s also a big baseball history buff and a huge White Sox fan.

So I guess it’s no surprise that he chose the year 1959 to replay.  I mean I’m a Cub fan so by the same token, I would probably choose… ummm, err, anyway, back to Chuck and his 1959 replay.

Chuck is replaying both National and American leagues.  Right now, he is pretty much at the halfway point, specifically, June 30.  Here are the standings:

National League Wins Losses PCT GB
1 Milwaukee Braves 45 28 .616 0
2 Pittsburgh Pirates 44 33 .571 3
3 Cincinnati Reds 41 33 .554 4 1/2
4 Los Angeles Dodgers 41 37 .526 6 1/2
5 San Francisco Giants 39 37 .513 7 1/2
6 St. Louis Cardinals 36 37 .493 9
7 Chicago Cubs 31 42 .425 14
8 Philadelphia Phillies 21 51 .292 23 1/2
    298 298

American League Wins Losses PCT GB
1 Chicago White Sox 52 20 .722 0
2 Detroit Tigers 42 32 .568 11
3 Kansas City A’s 35 35 .500 16
4 Baltimore Orioles 35 38 .479 17 1/2
5 Boston Red Sox 32 39 .451 19 1/2
6 Cleveland Indians 31 39 .443 20
7 New York Yankees 30 42 .417 22
8 Washington Senators 30 42 .417 22
    287 287

No surprise in the AL.  I’d accuse Chuck of bias if the White Sox weren’t as good as they were in real life in 1959.  Actual NL champs Dodgers have a ways to go to catch the first place Braves who actually placed second in 1959.

Chuck’s keeping pretty much every stat category.  For space reasons, I’m posting just a selection of categories for each league below.

I smile when I see the AL stolen base category.  It pretty much mirrors actual stats.  Luis Aparicio with 35 and that’s about it.  He pretty much had the corner on the market on steals in the league.

I’m noting that Don Blasingame is hitting way over his projected.   He hit .289 in 1959 and leads the NL in Chuck’s replay with a .346 average.

Nice job, Chuck!  Keep us informed and have fun with the All-Star game which has to be around the corner.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

One Comment:

  1. A great read. Still have that 1959 season. The original.
Played the National League with friends as a kid in ’60-61.
Tough to win with Dodgers. Giants get McCovey to come up in mid-season. Rookie of the year.
Blaylock has 10 wins. Wow! As I recall he wad a Grade D. Cleveland’s Tito Francona had 399 ABs. Needed one more for a batting avg title to beat out Kuenn.
I think the Davenport card had an error.
Thanks for stirring up great memories.
