It’s like night and day.
At 15-15, we’re not necessarily tearing it up in the Illowa APBA League but it is definitely an improvement over the 2024 season. Why? Consider this. Last year, we had no B or better starting pitchers. This year, we have six. It’s amazing how many 8s you can stop when you have one going for you on the mound.
Consistency in the lineup
One thing I really like about my team this year, is the consistency in the lineup. Six quality players have played over 150 games. That makes a difference because our league limits players’ games and at bats. For one, it is just easier with less lineup switching.
It’s gotten to the point that sometimes I am playing an OF-3 in the designated hitter role.
Highlights
Who are heavy hitters so far? Right now, Vladimir Guerrero fits that bill batting .351 with six homers and 19 rbis. The team rbi leader is a surprise. It’s Jeremy Pena with 20. Batting second mostly, Pena is hitting .260 with 15 runs and four homers.
Rookie Colton Cowser leads the team with eight homers. Unfortunately, Cowser leads the entire league in strikeouts.
My pitching has had a variety of luck despite their grade. The two standouts right now are Michael King (2-1, 2.32) and rookie Ryan Pepiot (3-0, 2.90). Veteran David Peterson and Max Fried are both 2-3 with 5.00+ ERA despite being B pitchers.
I was happy to see King and Pepiot among the league ERA leaders.
Right now, my Thunderchickens are in fifth place and four games back from Dennis Jennings’ first place Global Glaciers. Dennis quietly had a fantastic 19-11 weekend to start the season behind CJ Abrams and Juan Soto.
Overall, we can score… sometimes. I do feel that our lineup fits well together though I am confused why Whit Merrifield is hitting .286 while Michael Massey is hitting .182, a full 100 points lower.
Do I miss Elly De La Cruz? Maybe on occasion but I celebrate his successes. I know how much Don Smith likes him. Besides, the pitching is worth it.
