Joe Vance pitched for just three years in the American League in the mid-30s. Not really that well either.
However in his last year in 1938, his bat made some noise. In the four trips to the plate, he hit safely in three of them including two doubles. Joe even managed to score a run and drive one home.

Vance gets a pretty amazing card for just four at-bats. On his card, he gets ten sixes stretching out to 51. I know, it’s not statistically accurate but I suppose he gets a bit downgraded for only four at-bats. In addition, he gets four 7s (including one at 61 which I’m not sure I’ve seen before) and three eights and two 9s.
Both nines reside at the bottom at 26 and 46.
Interesting note: Vance gets a 53-8 so his required 21 is moved to 21 giving him a repeat number.
Was kinda hoping for a monster card world classic slant over the next couple of weeks. Something like: Monster Card Canadian — 2003 Eric Gagne …
Never thought I would see hit numbers at 26/46. I don’t know if I could resist pinch hitting runner on third with this guy regardless of the situation.

You bring up the real problem with cards based upon few at bats or innings pitched. The tempation is to overuse. That is why I really like the “real” monsters” like Sisler rather than the 4 at bat pitcher.
Hi Bob,
I don’t disagree with you. I am in my 1905 replay and John McGraw has a card that is in the Monster Monday files that is unbelievable for stolen bases. Check it out.
I have been pretty good about not using him, but there was a time that he covered for a player that was slumping, and then for another that was injured. So while he only played in 5 games that year I have used him in 17 games.
I guess it becomes a matter of the integrity of the person running the league (or in my case replay) and how they want to run things. (Here’s to hoping I am in the positive on this)
I like to feel I am being somewhere in the middle. I don’t go out of my way to use the card, but also feel if APBA puts the card out and you want to use it ok.
Personally I would think that to avoid this type of card they could just make a two column card with a lot of zero’s to limit the desire to overuse.
