Terrible Card Tuesday: 1951 Bill Jennings

IMAG0150

St. Louis native William Lee Jennings played for his hometown Browns in 1951.  Unfortunately, the shortstop didn’t wow the fans and that was his only year in the majors.

Jennings got plenty of playing time in ‘51, all things considered.  He came to bat 224 times.  Not only that, he started all of his 64 games.  He was your typical slender 6’2” 175 lb. shortstop.  All-field and no-hit.  Scratch that… according to APBA’s SS-6 rating, he couldn’t field either.

In 1951, Jennings batted .179 with no homers though he did manage 10 doubles and two triples.

Jennings four 14s belies his actual on-base potential.  His .276 OBP is pretty bad but I suppose it’s almost 100 points better than his batting average.

And why the SS-6?  Jennings committed 15 errors in his 64 games for a .953 fielding percentage.  A flawed stat to be sure but there’s no way around that one.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. First, let me say that I love Monster Monday and Terrible Tuesday. I played in a League for a longtime and miss it now.

I wanted to suggest a player for the Terrible Tuesday. Hal Finney of the Pirates had to have the worst card of all time considering he was 0-35 with 0 walks for a stunning OBP of .000. I actually drafted him with my last pick in a League we ran in the 1936 season.

If I remember correctly he had a 66-8 and a 11-9. Being a catcher he also had a 36 and 38 I think. It was staggeringly bad.

Just wanted to throw that out there. Keep up the good work.
