Terrible Card Tuesday: 1982 Dan Briggs

IMAG0280

An OF-1 with a 25-13… ouch.

To be accurate, 1982 Dan Briggs didn’t play much in the outfield for the Chicago Cubs.  He only took the field 14 times in 48 games and only started twice.  Looking at his APBA card, you can probably see why.  It was Briggs’ last year in the bigs and whatever offensive prowess he might have had was gone.

Briggs came to bat 50 times and collected six singles, a sacrifice and one hit by pitch.  Sad to say but it was an improvement over his one-for-eleven performance with the Twins the year before.

1982 Dan Briggs gets hit numbers 7-8-8-8-9-9 with one 42.  He has a 53-17 error number and a 15-40 unusual play number.  That’s about the extent of it.

Ugly numbers:  Take your pick.  25-13, 15-40, and 51-13

With Briggs’ five 13s, it wouldn’t be a stretch to bunt with this card… if you’re really desperate.

Bit o’ Trivia:  Briggs played for five teams in seven years in both leagues.  He never really found his groove.  For his career, he batted .195 with a sub-.300 OBP and slugging percentage.  His “best” year was his second season with California in 1976 when he batted .214 in 266 with 13 doubles and 14 rbis.

    • LOL, great story, Dan! I always tell myself when writing these Tuesday columns that no matter how bad these players were in the majors, they had to kick a** in the minors/college to get that far.

Hard to remember though sometimes. :)
