The Cubs complete their final full month of play by hosting the offense challenged Braves today. The Braves send Irv Young to the mound. Young has had a fine season, and deserves a much better record than he has ended the season with, but today is a chance for him to meet up with the red hot Mordecai Brown. 3-Finger tossed 9 no hit innings against the Dodgers last time out and still ended up with the loss. Given the number of times Young has allowed 1 or two runs, or 3 hits or less and came up on the short end there is no place to complain today.

Brown gets three quick outs, and looks very sharp so far. Meanwhile Young has a bit of a rough start as Billy Maloney draws a walk and with Jim Casey hitting the ball well lately the hit and run is on. Casey delivers and runners are on the corners with no outs and Frank Schulte, who really has had a great month. Schulte hits a rocket that Fred Tenney makes a great leaping grab and fires over to second to double Casey off second. Maloney is able to safely return to third. This is big as Frank Chance then rips a single to center that scores the first run of the day. Johnny Evers grounds out to end the inning, but the Cubs get a vital first run.

Nothing happens for either team, but for the Braves, nothing is literally happening, and Brown still has a perfect game at the end of six innings. The Cubs pad the lead as Schulte gets a one out single, and takes second when Virgin Cannell kicks the ball away. Still on second with two out Johnny Evers hits a soft fly that just escapes Fred Raymer and takes second on the throw home. Art Hofman then hits one at Raymer and he makes a solid backhand grab, but the throw is into the stands and Evers scores as Hofman is awarded second. Hofman is promptly out trying for third and the inning ends with the Cubs on top 3-0.

Brown gets through the 7th with the perfecto still intact, and the pressure mounts. The Cubs get nothing in the bottom of the inning and off to the 8th we go. Jim Delahanty strikes out for number one. Pat Moran then hits a solid single to left center that was as clean as it gets. I am bummed, but the Braves muster nothing else and while Raymer does get a two out single in the ninth inning the Braves are shut out yet again. Irving Young gets another tough luck loss as the Cubs go into October with a 1 game lead over the Giants who destroyed the Cardinals in a double header sweep earlier today.
