1931 Josh Gibson hits for the cycle in lucky Game Seven

The tension was high in the stands as the players took the field in Game Seven of the Monsters-Terribles series.  Coming back to Desperation Field, the home town fans were excited after the close 6-2 Game 6.

Alas, the Monsters had other plans.  Led by ‘31 Josh Gibson who hit for the cycle, the Monsters crushed the Terribles 22-1.  ‘82 Robin Yount contributed by getting four hits including a double and a triple.  In fact, four triples were hit by the Monsters.  Besides Gibson and Yount, ‘27 Lou Gehrig and ‘11 Ty Cobb hit three-baggers.

They weren’t the only ones though.  Terrible catcher ‘67 Johnny Bench who is making an early bid for Terrible MVP (or MVT as some are calling it), also hit a triple in the fourth inning.  That scored ‘67 Reggie Jackson who got on from a walk.

Around the dugout

image‘64 Joe Morgan was a little disappointed that he didn’t make a start in today’s game.  One look at his stats and you can see why.  Batting leadoff, he’s been hitless in the first six games.  ‘81 Vance Law spelled Morgan in today’s game but didn’t do much better going 0 for 3 with a double play.

‘22 Rogers Hornsby is ready to come back and play but at the rate ‘01 Napoleon Lajoie is hitting, it may be a while.  In the two games, Lajoie has played, he is 7 for 10 with four rbis.  Hornsby was benched after hitting .290 after five games.

Next up

Game Eight will give the Terribles’ ‘85 Matt Young a try against the powerful Monsters.  For the Monsters, it’s ‘08 Ed Walsh on  the bump.

Well that was a pounding to be certain. I have never had a cycle before. Still amazed at that card.
