Author: Thomas Nelshoppen

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

Weird Card Wednesday: 1934 Jim Winford

Judging by his 1934 card, it’s pretty evident that James ‘Cowboy’ Winford didn’t hit ball much.  Sure enough, in three plate appearances, the Cardinal pitcher walked twice and struck out once.  Split G GS PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG 1934 Totals…

Terrible Card Tuesday: 2013 Danny Espinosa

Here’s a recent Terrible card.  It’s 2013 Danny Espinosa of the Washington Nationals and to my interests, also of the Illowa APBA League’s Green Rock Bombers.  I faced him this past weekend when playing the IAL’s commissioner Mike Bunch. For the Nats, Danny Espinosa hit just .158 in 2013.  He…

Photos from the June 6-7 2014 IAL Spring Weekend

This past weekend, the Illowa APBA League got together in a hotel in Bettendorf, Iowa for some league action.  All ten teams were represented. Don Smith never forgets his homerun duck call.  It seems he got plenty of chances to use it last weekend, too.  According to Chicago Highlander manager…

Monster Card Monday: 1970 Johnny Bench

The younger version of this guy has been getting a lot of press in the Monsters-Terribles Series.  Johnny Bench may have been “Terrible” in his rookie year of 1967 but by 1970 he was an MVP. The Reds catcher won the award as well as getting an All-Star nod and…

Rolling with Brando before he leaves

Last night at our favorite coffee shop, my friend John Brandeberry and I got together for a little APBA.  We played our June Illowa APBA League series.  The score doesn’t matter.  We just had a great time.  We played our series instead of at this weekend’s league get together because…

Weird Card Wednesday: 2001 Matt Herges

John Roberts posted this beauty on Facebook a few days ago.  This reprint of Matt Herges 2001 card has something rather critical missing.  Why yes, I believe a pitching grade is in order. For what it’s worth, those in on the discussion think Herges should get a B* for his…

MCM vs. TCT Game 7: ‘31 Gibson’s cycle helps Monsters

1931 Josh Gibson hits for the cycle in lucky Game Seven The tension was high in the stands as the players took the field in Game Seven of the Monsters-Terribles series.  Coming back to Desperation Field, the home town fans were excited after the close 6-2 Game 6. Alas, the…

Terrible Card Tuesday: 1934 Charlie Moss

I found this Charlie Moss APBA card in my 1934 card which has plenty of fun cards in it. Moss simply batted 10 times and hit two singles as a backup catcher for the Philadelphia Athletics.  He scored three runs and drove in one. Split G GS PA AB R…

Monster Card Monday: 1979 Fred Lynn

Beginning in his rookie year, Fred Lynn was the consummate hitter.  He was part of the famous Red Sox outfield that included Dwight Evans and Jim Rice and occasionally Carl Yastrzemski.  It was in 1979 when he had his career year for the Red Sox.  That year, he led the…

Skyping APBA with Chuck one-handed… is that legal?

The Twin Cities Thunderchickens got their 9-game series in against Chuck Lucas and his Northside Hitmen for May albeit a little late.  That was due to many things not the least was me breaking my left clavicle last Sunday.  Chuck and played the five home games for Twin Cities a…
