The Cubs got the win they needed in game one, but things get much tougher as the Phillies send their number one starter “Frosty Bill” Duggleby. Bill’s had an interesting season. He was really strong in the early part of the season, back when Philadelphia was a factor, but when the hitting faded so did Bill. He faces Ed Reulbach. Considering how well Brown and Weimer have been the last two games expectations are high.

Not much happens early as both pitchers look strong. In the second Johnny Evers draws a leadoff walk and moves to second on a ground out. Joe Tinker then hits an RBI single to center and I believe now has a 6 game hitting streak. Joe has really been a big factor down the stretch. Duggleby slams the door and the score is still just 1-0 Cubs at the end of two.

Nothing has changed until the top of the fourth when Reulbach’s perfect game is ended by a leadoff walk by Bill Gleason. This starts the hit and run and the no hitter ends when Sherwood Magee’s grounder just escapes Evers’ diving attempt and runners are on the corners. The Phillies then surprise Chicago when John Titus lays down a suicide squeeze and the game is tied. You just don’t do this with your best hitter at the plate, but it pays off. Reulbach ends the rally, but the game is now tied at one apiece.

As the game wears on the pitching continues to dominate and the score was still tied until the Cubs strike again in the 6th inning. Frank Chance singles and steals second easily. Frank is still on second with one out when Art Hofman then hits one that second baseman Bill Gleason makes a wild throw on that allows Chance to score as Hofman is awarded second after the throw goes into the stands. Duggleby is visibly upset, but stays in control and the inning ends with the Cubs up by one run.

And that as basically the ballgame. Neither team could do much as both pitchers were on top of their games today, and it was yet again bad defense that gave the Cubs the win. Tinker looks to be at peak efficiency and I expect him to move up a bit in the lineup soon.
