Those of you who listened to John Asalon interview me on This Week in APBA a while back heard the story about how I was introduced to APBA by my older brother, Bill. I admit it, I idolized him and wanted to do everything he did. It probably irritated him to no end but he did take the time to teach me the game.
One of my favorite memories as a kid was the trip that the two of us took to the three Hall of Fames in 1978. We traveled to Cooperstown (saw Eddie Mathews inducted!!), Canton, and Springfield topped off by a visit to Fenway Park. Bill remains a Cubs fan and loyal to the Illini but hasn’t played APBA for a while now.
Fast forward to the present. I got a text from fellow Illowa APBA League manager Chuck Lucas. He told me he saw a listing on eBay selling some APBA football cards and the location in the profile was my small hometown. How small? Chuck knows firsthand. He came down from Chicago for a IAL weekend without directions and a phone number. It was just a matter of asking the people at the local Farm & Fleet where I lived. That story still gets told at IAL get-togethers.
Anyway. the eBay listings do indeed to belong to my brother Bill. Rumors spread easily in the APBA community.
So if you’re interested in some 1967 APBA Football cards, 1968 APBA Football cards or even some 1977 Topps baseball cards, I’m not above helping a bro.
Get them before Chuck snaps ‘em up!
I have several sets of APBA baseball cards available for sale.
I have several thousand cards. it appears there are full seasons of baseball and other sports. i wish to sell for a fair price. I am not sure how to proceed.
What I’m trying to find out is a local number for APBA in Alpharetta, GA.
