What really helps Bregman’s 2019 card is his league-leading 119 walks. That gives him six 14s. When APBA fans claim that a walk-prone hitter didn’t get enough hits, I’m ready to point out the 14s and how that alters the card’s average.

But you know what? I think the nay-sayers may have a point.

Bregman’s 2019 card may hit a few points below his real-life .296 batting average. Perhaps, once we see the grades from the entire set we’ll see the full picture.

Regardless, this Bregman card is power-laden (1-1-6-6) with plenty of on-base chances. On top of that he won’t slow you down since he is fast. His fielding is phenomenal as a Fielding One 3B and SS.

And how many 13s does Alex have? Just three.

I bet my buddy Don Smith can’t wait to play this card.

  1. I figure batting average like this:
30 non-walk chances minus .17 for the 22 and .08 for the 19 (for HBP) minus 1 for the 39 gives you 28.75 ABs for the card. 8-8-9-9-10 are about .8 hits each, and the power numbers are 1 hit each, giving you 8.0 H for the card, making the expected batting average 8.0/28.75 = .278.

  2. Steve, that’s pretty similar how I do it.
    I don’t adjust for the 22 and the 19 (I’m not as smart as you :) ). Also, I give the 10 a .9 value.

    thanks!!

  3. I like Alex Bregman and I think this is a good card. Not a lot wrong with it at all – although I hate seeing a 31 14 on a player who hit .296.

But it no way would I consider this a “Monster” card. No 7’s. No 11’s. And only 4 power numbers (and no 2’s, 3’s, 4’s or 5’s).

I think of something (for 1990’s to present days players) like Jeff Bagwell’s, Tony Gwynn’s, & Frank Thomas’s 1994 Cards, Albert Belle’s 1995 card, Alex Rodriguez’s & Ellis Burks’ 1996 cards, Ken Griffey Jr’s & Larry Walker’s 1997 cards, Mark McGwire’s 1998 Card, Larry Walker’s 1999 card, Todd Helton’s 2000 card, Sammy Sosa & Luis Gonzalez 2001 cards, and Barry Bonds’ 2001-2004 cards to be examples of “Monster” cards.

Have all of these cards been covered on Monster Card Monday?
