League Profile: Orlando APBA Association

From down south, we have the Orlando APBA Association.

Reading Rod Caborn’s summary, I couldn’t help but notice their mid-season call-up system.

“25 man active roster with total 35 man rosters (10 inactive for year.
At mid-season, maximum of three call-ups allowed (and three sent down)”

A few in my league have been advocating something like this in the last couple of years.  I’d love to hear how well this works (from Rod or anyone else who uses something similar).

Rod says:

“OAPBA is comprised of nine teams. Basics include:
80 game schedule. Each division team plays one another eight times in each half and plays four games against the other six teams in the league.
Three divisions of three teams each: Red Barber (north Orlando) ,

Harry Caray (metro Orlando) and  Ernie Harwell (south Orlando) Divisions.

25 man active roster with total 35 man rosters (10 inactive for year.
At mid-season (40 games), maximum of three call-ups allowed (and three sent down).
Draft each January. 15 rounds. Managers must cut at least 15 players prior to the draft.
Playoff format: Each division winner qualifies for the playoffs. The fourth-best record qualifies as a Wild Card and the team with the fifth-best record plays the Wild Card team in a “play-in” series.
Modifications include: if XB is drafted in first six rounds, the XB player, must stay on active roster for the entire season (this pre-empts ringer cards with limited appearances).
Total games pro-rated to determine the number of games in which a player can play.
Relief pitchers can pitch in three straight games, but then must rest.
Hit and run modifications (15 off for a ball or strike, which places some necessary limitations on managers who want to overuse the hit and run).”

Harry Caray and Red Barber Division… love it!

If you want to brag about your league, we’re listening!  Tell us all about the league you are in and we’ll post a profile about it.  In the meantime, read about other leagues who have written in.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

10 Comments:

  1. OAPBA handles roster management as follows:

    * Each team maintains a 35-man roster.

    * We play two 42-game halves. 25 man rosters.
At the break, between halves, managers can trade OR send as many as three players “down” to their inactive roster and activate as many as three players. This prevents “ringer cards” and encourages the drafting and use of players who were full-time players.

    * If an XB player starts the season on the active roster, the XB player must remain on the roster the ENTIRE SEASON. This is another preemptive move to discourage the use of “ringer” cards.

    * At the end of each season, managers must cut a minimum of 15 from their active roster, leaving them with a foundation of 20 players. Our draft, (15 rounds) replenishes the 35 man roster. Managers may choose to cut more than 15 players, but the minimum is 15. If a manager cuts more than 15, they are awarded extra picks in a 16th, 17th, 18th round, etc., depending on how many are still drafting at that point.

  2. “ringer cards”
yeah, i can think of a few in our history. :)

not so much for during the regular season because of our limits rules. but once or twice a manager may have picked a player b/c of his card thinking he *might* come in handy if he made the playoffs.

hence, our league came up with our J-rule, which limited j3 and j4 rookies to 3 and 3 starts in postseason serieses (I could be off on the numbers… Teddy could correct me if I’m wrong).

Bugs me when we have to regulate due to stuff like this :)

  3. Ringer cards: OAPBA regulates the ringer cards as follows:

    – XB cards, if put on the active roster for the first half, have to remain on the active roster for the entire year. Because XBs are usually players with limited appearances, this really hurts a manager’s flexibility in lineup usage and discourages reliance on XBs.

    – On a pro-rated basis, for an 84-game schedule, players cannot exceed their pro-rated number of games played. E.g., if a player played in 122 G in real life, they would be limited to 63 of OAPBA’s 84 games. We do not put at-bat limits…the game pro-rated feature seems to take care of the AB limitations.

    – We have a tough hit-and-run restriction. If 13 or 14 is the result on the player’s card, we take 15 off the base-stealing number, plus pitcher and catcher adjustment. This really puts the fear of God into managers who want to hit and run six or seven times a game. In real life, the hit and run only occurs about 70-80 times in a 162 game season. We’ve used this rule for about 10 years…and it really seems to work on cutting down abuse of the hit and run.
