Fun review of APBA’s SuperStars Baseball Game

Couldn’t help but post this… it’s interesting.  Today, the Jersey Family Fun web site posted a review of APBA’s SuperStars Baseball Game.  It’s a fun read (according to them, SuperStars Baseball is “Kind of like Candyland meets baseball”) especially looking at it from the perspective of us hard core tabletop APBA fans (watch out for the falling hearts!).

I’m honestly not familiar with APBA’s SuperStars Baseball Game and certainly didn’t have it back in my day.  I emulated my older brother who liked to replay the 1969 and 1970 seasons with the big boy version.  That would make me around 7 or 8.  I didn’t know all the rules perfectly and also didn’t know how to keep stats just right (fielder’s choices were somehow hits in my young mind).  But looking back, I’m impressed that I kept as detailed stats as I did.  Remember, this was back in the days before computers.  I did everything by pencil and paper.

Quick poll:  when did you all start playing the game of APBA?  I’m talking the “grown-up” version here.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

6 Comments:

  1. I first played APBA football in ’62 (1957 season) at a friend’s house when I was 9.

I started with Strat baseball in ’63 (’62 season), and played it for a couple of years until I went over to APBA for the ’64 season. From then on I bought just about everything APBA made (football, baseball, basketball, golf) until I went to college. I picked up with APBA baseball again in around ’88.

Never much liked the computer game, though. I like the dice!

  2. I definitely had all the lineups memorized when I was playing as a 7-year old.

  3. I started playing APBA when I was 14 with the 1973 season set. From there I bought most of the Great Teams of the Past and mainly did solo replays utilizing these teams. The ’09 Pirates won one League Pennant beating the ’11 A’s and the ’48 Indians beat the ’53 Dodgers in another. Great fun! I believe I still have most of the score sheets from these replays somewhere!

  4. I remember when I got the 1949 season. That was APBA’s first season of the past, I think. That was an eye opener for me.

I’ve said it before but I credit APBA for knowing my baseball history. It wasn’t enough to see and play the cards, I had to look up the stats and understand WHY the players had such good (or bad) cards.

My first *completed* replay was the 1977 Boston Red Sox which I did while in high school, shortly after that actual season. Lotsa power and NO speed. Lotta fun with Yaz, Scott, Fisk, Lynn etc.

  5. I started in July 1970. Played a 50-game season with 1969. My stat keeping was horrible too – but will always remember those cards (which I still have).

Only finished one replay: 1962. All stats done too. I have to post that somewhere sometime.

  6. this is my first visit and just wanted to stop by to say Hi there everyone
