Blast from the past: photos from 2002 APBA convention

I was re-organizing my photo gallery this afternoon and I ran across some photos from the 2002 APBA Convention.  I remember this trip fondly.  My buddy Brando and I drove out to Lancaster for the convention.  On the way and on way back we saw some minor league games.  The home teams we saw were the Indianapolis Indians, Reading Phillies, Harrisburg Senators plus the big league Pittsburgh Pirates.

Plus we got some APBA played.  We were in the middle of our 1979 NL replay and we took time out at roadside parks to play a series or two.

heh, then there was the tournament at the APBA convention.  I had the Milwaukee Braves of ’65 I believe.  I remember thinking that Joe Torre and his APBA smarts would bring me luck.

Nope, Eric Naftaly and his ’59 Giants took care of me pretty well in the first round.

If memory serves, 2002 was the year the kid won the tournament.  Does anyone remember his name?

I uploaded all the photos I found to the IAL photo gallery.  Take a look.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. The “kid” that won was Brian Wells. Brian also won the most recent tournament in Las Vegas. You can check the pictures of that tournament on the apbagames.com site.

  2. ..haha.. thats great..

I mean no disrespect of course.. Brando and I talked about how cool it was that some of the younger generation were playing..

    and apparently winning ;-)

  3. I did not take “kid” disrespectfully. It’s just that as you have now seen he is not too much of a “kid” anymore. I now find myself looking up at him which is just a bit disconcerting.

I read in an old AJ recently that the average player was around 20 years old. Since that was written 38 years ago I fear the average age is now more like 58. I hope that more kids come back to the board game. It’s not “Madden” but there is room for both, I think, for anyone. Brian loves to play the game and he really loves the annual tournament. I hope that more folks can come this year.

And bring your kid. He or she just may win it…

  4. hehe yeah.. i remember a touch of well-deserved envy from us old guys that year :)

I’ve played APBA golf wih my 11 year old (who is addicted to video games). I chose golf because for whatever reason that is the sport he identifies with. He used to watch it for hours on end on the weekend.

He seems to like it. and it helps him with his math skills ;-)

  5. I’m publishing this on Stumbleupon to talk about with my associates. I’ll just use your title as the text for your link. As I’m basically learning I’m not really sure I concur with what you’ve published however you do offer an excellent position.
