Monster Card Monday: 1908 Sam Crawford

This suggestion of 1908 Sam Crawford comes from Scott Fennessy, I believe.

As Ty Cobb’s teammate, Crawford really held his own during his career. His stats are littered with bold marks showing he could best the Georgia Peach.

1908 Sam Crawford

  • Led AL with 7 HR
  • batted .311
  • 16 triples

In 1908, Crawford hit .311 and led the AL with seven homeruns. He scored 102 runs and drove in 80. Wahoo Sam even stole 15 bases.

In most categories, Crawford came in second in the AL mostly behind Cobb. This includes doubles, rbis, hits, and slugging.

What Crawford brings to the table

Crawford’s 1908 card is a J-0 since he played 152 and started 151 of those. His power is pretty decent with four zeros. I know that’s nothing compared to the 2020’s but we’re talking deadball here. He should be able to eke out seven dingers with the three ones in the second column.

More impressively, Wahoo Sam has eight twos in the second column. It’s incredible that his sixteen triples didn’t lead the league but again, deadball.

Not to bury the lede, but Crawford has a pretty amazing 15-7. That’s a Monster card in my book especially for someone who plays every day.

Crawford’s ’08 card has absolutely no 13s against two 14s.

APBA put Crawford’s steal numbers in the second column. He has six 11s there.

Note that all players in the 1908 set published in 1979 received two error numbers. That’s why you see the 23-19 on Crawford.

Thanks Scott!

One Comment:

  1. Hi Tom,

Maybe there is a dearth of early seasons cards, but Crawford’s 1911 season FAR outpaced his 1908 card. I believe it is part of the OFAS-1 card set.

    Keep up the great work!
