Monster Card Monday: 1929 Al Simmons

Pastor Rich thought that Al Simmons’ 1929 card would be an apt addition to the Monster Monday collection.  While this card isn’t as juicy as ”Bucketfoot Al’s” 1930 card, it would do just fine hitting in the #3 or #4 spot in the lineup of any team.

In 1929, the Philadelphia Athletics won their first AL title since 1914 winning an even 100 games.  Thus began their next dynasty.  Al Simmons was a big part of their winning ways as was his role in the 1929 season.  He led the AL in rbis with 157 and total bases with 373.  When you have players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in your league, it’s hard to lead in any category.

The Milwaukee native also hit .365 and scored 114 runs while hitting 41 doubles and 34 homers.

As usual, Simmons doesn’t walk a lot… he prefers to hit, I guess.  He does get two 14s, though which is acceptable.  As for his power and overall hit numbers, Al is off the charts again.  Mr. Clutch has 1-4-5-5-6 and gets three 7s.

Simmons may not walk much but he doesn’t strike out a lot either.  He only has two 13s on his card.  Not only that, he received three 31s on this card.  His extra one is a 24-31.

Fun numbers: 22-5, 44-6, 25-7

And of course, Simmons is an OF-3.

For the first 11 seasons of his career, Al Simmons drove home 100+ runs.  In that span, he only hit 30 homers three times.  He did it with pure hitting and lots of playing time with help of teammates who got on base.

thanks, Rich!
