Monster Card Monday: 1947 Clint Hartung

Tom Fulton has a way of finding good hitting pitchers.  This 1947 Clint Hartung card is certainly no exception.

Hartung was no slouch with the bat.  In almost 100 plate appearances, he hit .309 with a .543 slugging percentage for the New York Giants in 1947.  He drove in 13 runs with four homers and 11 extra base hits overall.

In fact, the Giants found excuses to play him elsewhere as he found playing time at first base and in the outfield.

Part-time or no, Hartung is one of the very few APBA cards with three 5s.  His power numbers.  He is definitely clutch with power numbers 1-3-5-5-5.  The Hondo Hurricane has another 7 to go with that too.

Oh yeah, he’s Fast, as well.

Fun numbers:  44-5, 22-5

In case you’re wondering about the DW rating, it’s a little deceiving.  He had a decently productive year on the mound for the Giants in 1947 with a 9-7 record and a respectable 4.57 ERA in 23 games and 20 starts.

Hartung continued to play other positions in the field throughout his career.  By his last two years in 1951-52, he played in the outfield exclusively.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
