Monster Card Monday: 1966 Dick Allen

Charles Cox posted the original 1966 Dick Allen on Facebook and boy, it sure looked good! As some of you know, I have been off and on replaying the 1966 NL season (no comments from the peanut gallery, Bob) and through the All-Star break, Allen has been having himself an MVP season.

The thing is, I’m using the season set published in 2009. Allen’s card is quite good but there is nothing like a single column column to capture the essence of a slugger like Allen.

Dick Allen was only in his third full season in the majors in 1966. That year, he hit 40 homers while batting .317. He led the league with a .632 slugging percentage. He managed to hit triple digits in runs (112) and rbis (110).

Allen stole ten bases and also tripled ten times. He earned an All-Star bid and came in fourth in MVP voting for the 1966 campaign.

Allen’s Attributes

First, while Allen is certainly fast, don’t expect good fielding ratings from him. He was rated 3B-4 which was probably a gift. The upside is that he is able to play outfield albeit with an OF-1 rating.

Allen’s power is something else. Very few in the 1966 set can boast five full power numbers. His original card comes through with 1-1-3-4-6. The ‘3’ and the ‘4’ will help get his actual ten triples and on occasion, burst through for a homer. With a runner on third, Allen will have four chances for a home run.

After his power numbers, Allen has the typical 8-8-8-9-9 combination plus a 15-10. It helps a little that APBA gave him four 14s to recreate his 68 walks.

Never let it be said that Allen puts the ball in play a whole lot. Aside from his hit numbers, he has few ground balls and fly outs. His outs are mostly strikeouts. His card sports seven 13s (yes, that was a lot back then).

That said, this is a lovely APBA card and it sure would be fun to roll on!

thanks Charles!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

One Comment:

  1. His OFAS card is very similar and he bars clean-up for me for sure.
