Gary Woods’ card from 1980 has been a commonly requested card and Scott Fennessy came through for me.
As a Cubs fan, I remember Woods’ time in Chicago but APBA fans in general will know him for this card with Houston. Woods only played 19 games, starting September 1 and really took off. He went 20 for 55 (.377) with two homers and five doubles.
Split | G | GS | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1980 Totals | 19 | 13 | 55 | 53 | 8 | 20 | 5 | 0 | 2 | 15 | 1 | 2 | 9 | .377 | .400 | .585 |
Gary Woods 1980 card has a relatively rare 1-6-6-6 power combination. More significantly, he has plenty of hit numbers. In addition to his 15-10, he has four 7s to go along with his 8-8-8-9-9 numbers. This means that he has a 64-9 and a 61-9… pretty rare for his era.
One reason for the increased amount of hit numbers is Woods’ low walk rate. He only walked twice in 55 plate appearances. For that, APBA gave him just one 14.
Woods was rated an OF-2 and a Fast baserunner.
Of note, APBA gave every card in the original 1980 card set a 65-12. The 65 is such an automatic result of 35 that I’m sure it took a while for all of us to get used to that. To complicate matters, the 35 was moved to 63 where the second 31 usually resides.
thanks Scott!
