Monster Card Monday: 1982 Mike Schmidt

There have been have a lot of Mike Schmidt monster cards that I have posted about. Since today is the anniversary of his MLB debut in 1972, I’ll do another one.

There certainly a lot to choose from. So far, I haven’t gotten to his 1982 one so let’s dive in.

In 1982, Schmitty hit .280 for the Phils with 35 homers while leading the NL with 107 walks. He hit 26 doubles. Interestingly, he scored more runs (107) than he drove in (87).

My theory is that he batted third in lineup for a good part of the season.

In either case, it was an excellent season for Schmidt who helped the Phillies to a second place finish in 1982.

Schmidt was named to the NL All-Star team and was awarded a Gold Glove and placed sixth place in the MVP voting.

Mike Schmidt’s 1982 card received power numbers 1-1-6-6 and no 7s. He did however, garner a 15-10 and a 25-10 thanks to his 14 steals.

Look at the number of 14s on Schmidt’s card. He’s got a total of six. So even against an A pitcher, this card has 12 on-base chances not including his error number.

Of course, Mike Schmidt is rated a 3B-5 as he was for most of his career. He even has SS-6 and 2B-5 added for those extra inning games.

Note: APBA placed the 12 at 32 for the 1982. The 26 was relocated to 23. Now that the 12 has been permanently moved to 23, that 12 looks so odd there.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

One Comment:

  1. Schmidt hit third in just 35 games in 1982, and fourth in 112.
