Monster Card Monday: 1986 Mike Scott

Mike Scott

Pastor Rich knows his Monster cards, that’s for sure.  While this one won’t hit, you won’t find many modern day starting pitcher with this kind of grade and rating.

Mike Scott started his career in a mediocre fashion in 1979.  Then in 1986 after one decent year, something clicked and he had a super season for Houston.  He not only won 18 games but he struck out 306 batters in 275 1/3 innings averaging 10 Ks in 9 innings pitched.

Scott’s AKZ rating is one of the rare AKZ ratings for a modern starter.

For those who haven’t tried the K rating yet (I know you’re out there), I’ll give you a sampler.  With the bases empty, a K pitcher strikes out the batter on a 24, 28, 30 and 32 in addition to the 13.

Needless to say, he’s throwing heat.

thanks Rich! We missed you in Grayslake!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I have not had opportunity to play the new cards! I thoroughly enjoy your Monday-Wednesday card reveals, especially if it is a version of a card I have not seen before (i.e. the newer releases of old seasons).

  2. I loved playing 1986 Mike Scott, which i did when the set was new, in ’87. it wasn’t this card, of course, with the K, but he was sensational that year and had a great playoff if i recall correctly.

  3. I’m actually in the middle of a 1986 full-season replay, and Mike Scott has already thrown the first (and possibly only) no-hitter of the season. Far and away the best carded starting pitcher of 1986’s APBA set.

  4. Wow. I have an original ’86 Scott and it’s only an XY rating with the Z
