After this weekend’s Illowa APBA League’ Draft weekend, my fellow co-Manager of the Year (yes, that was a feeble attempt to subtly brag) Marcus Bunch asked me if I have ever featured Todd Helton’s 2001 card on Monster Card Monday.
No, I hadn’t! And what a card it is! For the Rockies, Helton hit .336 with 49 homeruns. On top of that, he also hit 54 doubles.
Helton did this in a full (159 games) season and even won the Gold Glove.
Split | G | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2001 Totals | 159 | 697 | 587 | 132 | 197 | 54 | 2 | 49 | 146 | 7 | 98 | 104 | .336 | .432 | .685 |
Hitting .336 is one thing. Hitting 49 homers is one more thing. But when a player hits 54 doubles, you’re looking at six power numbers. And that is exactly what 2001 Todd Helton got with his 1-1-0-0-0-0 combination.
Wow! Helton also receives five 14s including a 23-14 (much better than the 23-12, right?).
Hey, Helton isn’t your DH-type either. He received a glorious 1B-5 rating.
How did he do for Marcus back in 2002? Well, Marc has a way of rolling well for players he likes.
Player | YEAR | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | SO | SB | AVG | SLG | OBP |
Helton | 2002 | 159 | 587 | 138 | 192 | 46 | 3 | 69 | 156 | 81 | 97 | 7 | .327 | .768 | .409 |
Helton toyed with the homerun record by hitting 69 and still has the record for highest slugging percentage at .768.
thanks, Marcus!
Now that is what I call a Monster card! Mr. Helton had 100 EBH and 400 Total Bases, two years in a row! I don’t believe anyone else has ever matched that feat.
But I did find a small error in your report “Helton also receives six 14s including a 23-14…). I only see FIVE 14’s.
Daniel, I am going to hire you as a fact-checker! Thanks!!
Glad to help. :) I really enjoy your blog entries.
