Shawn Baier from the excellent website The Boys of Summer suggests today’s Monster Monday card. It is the 2004 Troy Tulowitzki card when played for the Colorado Rockies.
Shawn says:
It’s seems crazy to me that Tulowitzki has already retired, but I was browsing through my cards, and found this Monster Card nominee from 2014, sure he’s a J-3, but this a really nice card.
Shawn probably doesn’t know this but Tulo was a first round pick for my Twin City Thunderchickens. In fact, he was the very first pick in the draft in 2008.
Split | G | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2014 Totals | 91 | 375 | 315 | 71 | 107 | 18 | 1 | 21 | 52 | 1 | 50 | 57 | .340 | .432 | .603 |
Yes, Troy is a J-3 but Shawn is right. Despite the low playing time, this is quite a card. With power numbers 1-1-6-6 look out with runners on third base! Not only does he have four homeruns on his card, he also has four eights. Those eights are hits against an A pitcher.
The best thing about Tulo’s 2014 card in my opinion, are those numbers which are not automatic outs when they appear to be. Check out his numbers like 26-14 and 21-23 and even 62-39.
Unfortunately, Tulowitzki was not a member of the Thunderchickens when 2014 rolled around. I made a slightly questionable trade during a down year for Tulo which brought me Jose Reyes and Jonathan Papelbon (appropriately, this is Reyes’ last year in the IAL).
Wouldn’t you know it? That trade was made in 2013 and Tulo would go on to have a banner year.
thanks for the suggestion, Shawn!
