Monster Card Monday: 2019 Cody Bellinger

Last week, I posted Christian Yelich who I think has the best card among starters in the 2019 set. A close second in my opinion is LA Dodger Cody Bellinger.

Bellinger was the MVP for the National League this year. However, he only led the league in one major category (total bases with 351). That said, his numbers are impressive. He hit 47 homeruns with 34 doubles. He hit a career-high .305 batting average and showed a bit of speed with 15 stolen bases, too.

And unlike Yelich, he gets to play almost every day at 156 games.

First things first… Bellinger may hit like a slowfooted DH but he isn’t. He comes with a Fast rating and is rated as an OF-3 and a 1B-5.

This is why:

That’s right, Bellinger was highly regarded in the field. So much so that he won the Gold Glove Award.

Offensively, Bellinger has five power numbers but they are a bit diluted by the singles in the second column. He received the still-powerful 1-1-0-0-0 combination. I count eight singles in his second column.

Like Yelich, Bellinger received a 55-8. With his five 14s (not to mention the 15-10), he should be able to replicate his .305 batting average with some luck.

With the 15-10 being the only speed number, Bellinger will need to get some of his 15 steals from the second column which will no doubt frustrate Bellinger owners and fans. He has five 11s in the second column.

I know my buddy Scott Fennessy is looking forward to playing this card in the Illowa APBA League especially now that he has some pitching to back it up ;)

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I love you my brother but I think Trout has a better card than Bellinger? Take another look (coming from a biased opinion..lol).

  2. Hi Tom,

When I drafted Bellinger over Judge my research was pretty deep as I was sure I would pick the wrong player. Every single report at the time said he was the best athlete in the entire organization, so the transition is not a complete surprise to me.

While I am certainly looking forward to this card next season I would have to admit that Mike Trout and perhaps even Nolan Arenado have better cards.

  3. Not meant to disrespect Bellinger in way of course…he still have a beautiful card. I also weigh the cards based on playing in a small pitching rich League……I can never get Trout to anywhere near his average because the 8’s get smashed. He will get close to his OBA though thanks to all the walks…..got a 1-5-5 hitter behind Trout? What a dream !

Good luck with Bellinger my friend; hope he brings you a pennant.

  4. Hey Dom!!
