Monster Card Monday: 2021 Jacob deGrom

Rich Zawadzki suggested this amazing card. While Jacob deGrom’s 2021 card was based on a slightly limited season, APBA didn’t penalize him.

deGrom went 7-2 with a miniscule 1.08 ERA. He walked 11 batters and struck out 146 in 92 innings for the Mets. Worth noting, he did not have a wild pitch or a balk and only hit one batter.

On top of all of that, deGrom could hit! In 2021, he batted .364 (12 for 33) and hit one double.

There’s a lot right about this card. Unless your name is Ed Walsh, you can’t do much better.

First, he is an Grade A&C pitcher. Very few starters get combined grades. deGrom certainly deserves it with his 1.08 ERA. With this grade, he will stop play result 9 with a runner on first.

Sidenote

I know it’s a point of discussion whether the A&C is stronger than the A&B. The argument is that Runner on First happens more frequently so it has more of an impact than the A&B. I used to believe that until a smart man in my league convinced me otherwise. I’ve come around to the thought that the A&B is indeed stronger for these reasons:

  • The A&B is in effect in three base situations (Runner on Third, Runners on First and Third and Runners on Second and Third)
  • All three of those base situations are scoring situations

Back to deGrom; the A&C is still excellent. He struck out 146 batters in 92 innings and that got him not only a K rating but also an X. Not much gets into the field with him on the mound.

Along with KX, deGrom received a ZZ meaning that walks are drastically reduced. With Bases Empty (and a few other situations too) a 14 is turned into a Ball Two.

Again, deGrom gets it right. And I haven’t even gotten to his hitting card which boasts numbers 6-7-7-7-7-7-7. That’s a 15-7!

deGrom is in my league but unfortunately, he is not on my team. My friend, Dennis has him on his third place Global Glaciers. How’s he doing so far in our Illowa APBA League season?

Well, we’re just past the halfway point of our season and it looks like Dennis is saving most of deGrom’s starts for the second half. But it looks he’s online to replicate his stats even in the 10-team league which tends to have concentrated talent. deGrom is 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA. He has 6 walks and 74 Ks in 42 innings.

thanks for idea, Rich!!

One Comment:

  1. No 14s on this card… kind of unusual, no?
