Monster Card Monday: 2021 Trea Turner

If you’re a baseball fan, you probably knew that Trea Turner was the NL batting champion with a .328 batting average. And it wouldn’t surprise anyone that he led the league with 195 hits.

But here’s something that caught me off guard a little… Trea Turner led the NL in total bases with 319. If you’re wondering, Austin Riley was second in the NL with 313.

Granted, it wasn’t a typical Trea Turner year at the plate. Between Washington and LA, Trea hit 28 homers which is nine more than he has hit in a season. Turner had 34 doubles to go with his 28 dingers. Of course, he also led the league in steals too with 32.

I have to say for someone like Trea Turner’s credentials, his stats don’t necessarily translate to APBA well. Think a modern day Rod Carew.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a great card. However a lot of metrics I use don’t fit with 2021 Trea Turner. Power numbers? Well, he has a 1 and three zeroes. His second column is decent but not fantastic with the first 6 at 31.

Hit numbers?? He has a 55-8. Okay, that’s not fair because Turner has a 15-11 and a 25-10. Tell that to any Turner owner when they roll a 55 against a B.

Surely, he has lots of 14s, right? Nope, just two.

I don’t mean to bash on Trea Turner because I liked the guy (I drafted him). For some reason, I’m not wowed by this card like other monster cards.

Feel differently? Do I have high expectations? Let me know.

Still think this a good card regardless. And I always liked Rod Carew.

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I agree with your comments. Hmmm, new weekly topic? Good MLB players who don’t translate to APBA success. (I nominate Alan Trammell.)

On a serious note, would you bat this card leadoff with only 2 14s?

  2. Definitely doesn’t make sense. Ohtani’s card seems to have more. Opportunities to get on base despite having a lower OBP.

  3. I agree Tom. It doesn’t look like a monster card to me, despite Turner leading the league in average, SB & Total Bases,

  4. this card isn’t fair for Turner. only batting .270 against C pitching. he should probably have another 10 at 51 in my opinion. I mean he won the batting title in 2021 for goodness sake.
