Looking through my new 1930 baseball card set, I saw plenty of monster cards and a few terrible ones too. But what’s this? Hall of Famer Dave Bancroft? With a 33-14?
Sure enough, in his last season in baseball, “Beauty” Bancroft went 1 for 17 for John McGraw’s New York Giants. That one hit was a double. Bancroft also walked twice and struck out once in his farewell season.
Split | G | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1930 Totals | 10 | 19 | 17 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 | .059 | .158 | .118 |
Probably the most terrible thing about Bancroft’s 1930 card is his SS-7. Bancroft was known through his career for his impeccable defense. Age finally caught up to him in 1930, I guess.
Two 6s and three 14s are about all there is to Bancroft’s card.
Ugly numbers: 33-14, 25-13, SS-7
I’ll be taking Bancroft’s 1930 New York Giants to the Prairieland APBA Baseball Tournament (have you signed up?). Interestingly, Bancroft will be riding the Giants bench with fellow Terrible Card Chick Fullis who has a 33-13.
Words that do not belong together: “Hall of Famer Davey Bancroft.”
oh harsh. But yeah, veterans committee inductee. :)
lets not be too hard on the card – he doesn’t have “Two 6s and three 14s are about all there is to Bancroft’s card. “, he has FOUR 14s (33, 22, 45, 55). :)
Daniel, you need to be my official fact-checker :)
