I thought last week’s Terrible Card was pretty bad but Jacinto “Jackie” Hernandez’ 1966 card gives Cleo James’ 1973 card a run for its money. The suggestion of Hernandez comes from Scott Veatch who sent in the scan of the 1964 GTOP mailing (which by the way, has been quite popular. I’m going to make that a regular thing).
The funny thing is that I’m replaying the 1966 NL set and haven’t noticed Hernandez on Angels since I’ve been quite busy with the Senior Circuit. I do have the reprint set so I’m going to have to check how much he’s changed. Judging by the black font (used on XBs at the time) Scott’s version is obviously an original print.
In 1966, Hernandez batted a paltry .043 (1 for 23) for the Angels with two walks and five strikeouts. Like James from last week, he was obviously used as a pinch runner seeing as he scored 19 runs.
Split | G | GS | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1966 Totals | 58 | 5 | 27 | 23 | 19 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 5 | .043 | .115 | .043 |
Hernandez definitely has a card made for pinch running. His hit numbers are simply 8-9-11. Yes, that’s it.
He also has a 45-14, a 33-20 and a 22-39. Nothing else remotely resembles an offensive number on his card. The 1973 Cleo James’ card may have had an 11-40 but at least at three 11s to make up for it.
Ugly numbers: 33-20, 44-13, 11-9, 66-8, 31-26, stop me when you’ve heard enough.
I will say this for the card. He’s rated at four different positions, albeit poorly. He rated as a 3B-3, 2B-5, SS-6, and a OF-1.
Tom, I was going to suggest Hernandez 1967 card for TCT, but it’s not as bad as the 1966. I am a fan of Hernandez though, he was the starting shortstop on my all time favorite ball club, the 1971 world champion Pittsburgh Pirates.
