Courtesy of Scott Veatch, here is Chicago Cub Randy Bobb’s 1968 APBA card. I was only four years old at the time but I was a little surprised that I hadn’t heard of this Northside catcher. Then again, manager Leo Durocher had a penchant for overusing Randy Hundley behind the plate so Bobb wasn’t about to see much playing time. As a matter of fact, weary Hundley played 160 games in 1968 and he started 156 of those games. Of the remaining six games, John Boccabella started four and Bobb got the rest for the 84-78 Cubs.
It was Randy Bobb’s rookie year and he only played a total of seven games. He hit one single and walked once in 9 plate appearances.
Split | G | GS | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1968 Totals | 7 | 2 | 9 | 8 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | .125 | .222 | .125 |
Randy Bobb gets hit numbers 7-7-8-8-9-9 but does have four 14s. It’s a good thing that Randy Hundley played the lion’s share behind the plate since Bobb is a Catcher-5.
Ugly numbers: 15-14, 31-36, C-5
Bobb only lasted one more year in the majors. He played even less in 1969, going hitless in two at-bats.
thanks Scott Veatch!
