Terrible Card Tuesday: 1981 Vance Law

ldahoan Vance Law wins this week’s prize as Terrible Card Tuesday rolls around.  True, the Pittsburgh infielder didn’t play much in 1981 with only 71 plate appearances but his card is pretty atrocious.

Law was in his sophomore year with the Pirates in 1981.  He only batted .134 with just one triple and eight singles in 67 at-bats.  He walked twice, stole a base and was caught stealing once.  He somehow managed to drive home three rbis.

Law probably has some sort of record like most number of 11s on a card by a player with just one stolen base.  He has eighteen 11s, all in the second column.

Vance Law just has one power number and really, not even that.  His 66-0 is balanced out by the second column 11s so it calculates out to one-half of a power number.   After that, he gets the standard 8-8-8-9-9 and no more.  A 15-36 and a 25-13 shows what Law’s offensive value is in 1981.

To be fair, Law does play three infield positions (2B-7 SS-7 and 3B-4).  Some league managers would love to have that versatility.

Vance Law did have better years.  He hit for some power with the White Sox when he cranked 17 homers in 1984.  With Montreal (does anyone miss the Expos?), he batted .266 with 75 runs and 52 rbis in 1985.  Two years later, he hit .273 with them.

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I miss the Expos…….my favorite non Phillies player growing up was Larry Walker. You cant argue with that farm system and scouting department…….lets not also forget Youpi!!!!

  2. Saw the expos in 1969 at Forbes Field. Those blue uniforms with different stele numbers were something else. It was a double header, which the pirates swept. My dad dropped me and my cousin off, as we were approaching the ticket window a man asked if we needed tickets. We said yea and he handed us two. The seats were in the front row behind home plate, incredible! I even got a ball, one got away from Jose Pagan as the players were warming up before the game. Alou and Stargell had both had a good night and I remember Dock Ellis beaning Mack Jones, the ball bounced about 30 feet into the air. In his next at bat Jones ripped a homer off Ellis. I was 15 then, and have a lot of great memories from old Forbes field.
