Terrible Card Tuesday: 2011 Carlos Corporan

image

I’m going back just a couple years for this week’s Terrible Tuesday entry.  It’s Carlos Corporan’s 2011 season when he just came up with the Houston Astros.  [Note:  this isn’t an actual card.  Since I’m on vacation, it was easier to snip a digital copy.]

Corporan had a rough first real year with the Astros.  After hitting 1.000 (1 for 1) for Milwaukee in his cup o’ coffee in 2009, reality set in for his 2011 season with the Astros and he batted .188 with 8 doubles and a triple in 173 plate appearances.  But no dingers.

Not much goes right with this card.  Corporan is slow, a bad fielder (a C-6), and his hitting numbers are pretty poor.  He does get power numbers 6-6 but after that it’s just the standard 8-8-8-9-9 combination and that’s about it.

A couple notes and oddities:  Corporan does get a 13-42 deservedly so.  He was hit four times in 173 plate appearances.

One oddity is that his error number is moved from 53.  He has a 53-13 and instead has a 25-20.  My only guess is that there was no other appropriate number to put at 25, 51 or 31.  He didn’t have enough walks or hits.  The only other option was to give him a 13-13 and put the 42 at 25.  Otherwise, an out number at 31 would look too strange.

  1. The 53-13 is not so odd when you’re talking REALLY bad cards. You see it a lot with pitchers. 13-14 is common, but with players with few hits and 1 walk you sometimes see 53-22 and 13-error number (if the player rates a 22… Ben Broussard had some of these kind of cards).

This is a very rare case of 7 hits, 1 walk, 2 rare plays AND a 42. Since he doesn’t rate a 13-14, 13-42 makes sense. And he doesn’t have enough hits, so 25-ER makes sense as well.

Hank Conger this year is another example. Almost identical card, but with less power and fewer strikeouts.

  2. Hey and check out JR Towles 2010. 13-22, 53-22, 25-19. RPs at 31 and 51.

    But pitchers are different. Padilla 2010 13-13, 53-21, 25-36, 51-42.
