Terrible Tuesday (my mea culpa for the Missing Monster Card Monday): 1966 Carl Warwick

It’s been a while since I missed a Monster Card Monday. Yesterday, it couldn’t be helped. It was one of those days. Then when I found the time, the website was down for a brief time. So I’m making it up with a one time only (maybe) ‘Terrible Tuesday’

Carl Warwick wasn’t a great baseball player but he certainly wasn’t horrible either.  He managed to play for six years and hit .248 in the pitching-rich 60s.  He hit a career high 17 homeruns in 1962 for the Cardinals and the Astros.  He even tied a World Series record for three pinch hits in one Series for the Cardinals in 1964.

Even Warwick’s batting average in 1966 wasn’t crazy terrible.  In the 22 at-bats, he hit .227.  What puts Warwick in the untenable category, is two things.  One, he hit five singles and that’s it.  No extra base hit power, no walks and no steals.

As a result we get a rather interesting card for Warwick.  On the one hand, he has a relatively respectable 15-8.  On the other, the lack of walks and steals forces APBA to give the Cub outfielder a 31-13 at the same time.

The other frustrating aspect (at least for those doing replays) is that the Chicago Cubs must have had high hopes for Warwick in 1966.  At the beginning of the 1966, they experimented with leading him off.  For those replayers who insist on using actual lineups, this is an exercise in patience as we know better. (“He WON’T walk, I tell ya!”).

Warwick didn’t last long in the majors as this was his last year in pro baseball.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I kind of like the concept. I could send you several from the 1901 Giants and Indians that were actually regulars that had out numbers in spots like 31 and 51.

Maybe if you have a time where you just don’t have a monster card available you can run this instead.

  2. Terrible Tuesday, another good reason to follow the blog.
