Weird Card Wednesday: 1967 Allan Lewis

Q:  How does an APBA card reproduce 14 steals in just 6 plate appearances?

A: Any way that it can.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I’ve never seen a 40* and probably never will again!

  2. Tom, life is now back to normal now that you have posted another “Weird Card Wednesday”!!!

Great to have you back posting!

  3. For guys like this (who were clearly used primarily as pinch runners), I wonder if anybody has “house rules”.

My point being is that he can’t pick up steals as a PR.

Looking at it, I’d be inclined to create a house rule where, if a pinch-runner is brought in, roll against their card. If they roll an 11, 10 or any reading with an asterisk (*), they steal the base ahead of them provided it is either 2nd or 3rd base.

That would give Lewis a 27.8% chance (10 out of 36) of swiping a base if you bring him in.

    In 1967, Lewis had 6 pinch-hit appearances and 28 pinch-runner appearances.

Using the suggested house rule, he’d likely pick up 1 or 2 SB in the 6 PH appearances. And, assuming you brought him in with SB opportunities, he’d get about 8 SB from that. That gets him close to 10 SB total, which still isn’t 14, but a heck of a lot better than the few he’d get with just 6 plate appearances alone.

Just food for thought. Not sure if anybody else has come up with any similar rules for a guy like this or 1974 Herb Washington –
Oakland, 92 games, ZERO plate appearances, 29 SB, 16 CS.

    • I just picked up the 74 set as a reprint and have a question about Herb Washington. The card looks like a normal “XC” card with not much for hits, but still does allow for them.

I was under the assumption that when this was a “new” set they made an odd card with some random numbers that would not allow for an “at bat roll” and you had to use some special instructions.

With with the reprint card a manager could actually use him as a regular player.

  4. Wow that’s a crazy card but of course it still won’t give him the 14 steals. For my aborted 1976 A’s replay I did use some house rules for Larry Lintz (68 games, 4AB and 31 steals 11cs.)
I think it was pretty simple…use him as a pinch runner then 1-4 he has a steal attempt and then like 1-5 successfully steals.I’ll have to check how he is doing. By the way does anyone have a Larry Lintz Card for posting from that set? (If it even exists.)
    Cluke

  5. Just wishing they could have gone with the 31* (steals second after a successful hit-and-run), or the 26* and 28*, which can be hits through a drawn-up infield. Damn you, Charlie Finley…
