trophy

Who’s going to the Chicagoland APBA World Series Tournament in November?  I will.  For those interested, here are the pertinent details from co-organizer Doug Schuyler:

  • Saturday, November 16th
  • Woodstock, IL
  • 9 AM to 5 PM

If you haven’t read my interview of Doug, he gives a pretty good overview of what’s behind the tournament.  Lately, he and co-organizer Jim Saska have been busy working up a set of rules for the tournament.  Doug sent this final draft of the rules to me tonight.

APBA Chicago World Series Tournament rules

· The basic game will be used with old school boards and booklet.

· You may bring any MLB team 1900-present. (APBA issued cards only-no copies allowed).

· 20 man max roster (bring APBA roster sheet for your team).

· Regular and XB cards may be used. No XC’s allowed.

· Please bring a roster sheet with copies to be passed to the opposing manager before each game. Roster sheet should have full name with position and stats for that season only.

· Cards without the injury denotation at the bottom of the card will be limited to….pitchers with less than 100 innings pitched may not start. Position players with less than 100 at-bats may not start and may not enter the game prior to the 6th inning unless there is an injury.

· Teams will be placed into divisions with a blind draw.

· Round robin play will be used.

· Top 2 teams from each division will advance to the playoffs. Side games can be played if you are eliminated.

· Tie breakers; head to head, fewest runs allowed, run differential, most runs scored, coin toss.

· One division head will be chosen to assist in keeping track of scores.

· The DH will be used for all games to speed up play for games and tournament.

Pitching

· A 3 man rotation will be used.

· No J-4 starting pitcher may start.

· No pitcher only rated as a reliever (denoted by an asterisk by the pitcher’s grade) may start.

· Regular APBA basic game grade advancements are in effect; 5 consecutive shutout innings equal a grade advancement; 5 innings D to C, 6 innings C to B, 7 innings B to A.

· Any pitcher that allows 5 runs in any 3 consecutive innings is lowered one letter grade.

· Starters must pitch at least 5 innings unless affected by grade reduction.

· Relief pitchers with *asterisk are limited to two innings or 6 total outs.

· Pitchers with straight grades or split grades are limited to 3 innings or 9 total outs.

· Any relief pitcher is advanced one letter grade for only the first batter they face in the middle of any inning (righty/righty, lefty/lefty matchup is not in effect).

· All pitchers will be a straight grade D (with no x, y, z, w ratings) starting the top of the 10th inning to ensure speed of game and tournament.

· In the final championship game, any pitcher rated as a starter may start. A relief pitcher may not start.

· Pitchers cannot bat but may pinch run.

Fielding

· Total team fielding and optional fielding ratings will be used.

· Any player who does not have a fielding rating for a position will be considered the lowest fielding rating if placed into the game.

· No player may start a game at a position for which they do not have a rating.

· The manager must declare deep or in with a runner on third base. If not declared, the infield will be considered deep.

Baserunning

· A manager must declare whether or not a runner is holding/playing it safe. If they are holding/playing it safe, they would only advance as far as the batter. Example, with a runner on first base and the batter doubles, the runner would only advance two bases and go to third and not score despite the board result. All board steal results or thrown out trying to steal results are negated if the manager was holding/playing it safe with the runner.

· No limit to sacrifice attempts.

· A maximum of 6 hit and runs per game for post 1919 teams.

· Unlimited hit and runs for pre-1920 teams (dead ball era)

Housekeeping rules

· Any injury is only sustained for that game. The player may return to the lineup for the next game.

· The DH will be used for all games

· Roll for home field prior to the game. High roll gets home field for that game.

· Dice may be rolled on table or in a box

· Re-roll both dice if they go off table or out of box

· If one die rolls off, then only re-roll that die.

We will establish a deadline of November 1st, 2013 so that we can determine how many divisions, round robin play and plan for food. Please email both Jim Saska and Doug Schuyler at the emails below with your name, cell phone number and your team.

Please also bring a few dollars for food and beverages. (Please no alcoholic beverages).

Thanks and we look forward to a great tournament!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
