My cross-town, APBA-playing buddy Brando had a moving sale yesterday so my wife and I went to see what he had to sell. I knew he would have a lot of sports-related items so this wasn’t going to be your typical garage sale. I wasn’t disappointed.
John surprised me by actually giving me this awesome framed photograph titled, “Classic Cubs”. I love it! It’s already hanging on my basement office wall.
I’m appealing to the baseball history buffs out there to help me out by identifying the players in the photo. Has anyone seen this photo before or know who is in it? The person to the left seems to be a coach or manager since he’s not doing any work. :) I might do a little research on my own to figure out this mystery.
I bought this strange little souvenir for a quarter. The best way to describe it is that it’s a Omar Vizquel rubber duckie. Yes, it even squeaks.
I’ve noticed this around John’s house before and I even posted a photo of it on Rich Ozz Selg’s page on Facebook. It’s such an odd piece of memorabilia. Don’t tell John but I would have paid double for it.
My most useful purchase was one of John’s glass top tables. I didn’t come with the idea of buying furniture but I’ve been playing my 1966 replay on a clunky card table in my basement. I needed an upgrade.
There’s something about rolling on a real hard surface. I have it set up and have already played a couple games on it (that said, the lowly ‘66 Mets beat the Cubs in my first game using it so there’s that).
I even took a photo from below after my Mets-Cubs game just for kicks.
Brando had more baseball stuff for sale so I may go back for his next sale in a couple weeks.
Update: Special thanks to Mike Miller who helped decipher the mystery of the Cubs picture on the APBA Baseball FB group. Mike says,
"Around the horn: Chuck Connors, (The Rifleman), Eddie Miksis, Roy Smalley, (Father of Roy Smalley), and Randy Jackson."
thanks, Mike!!
On the photo, I would guess it was taken in spring training given the background of the photo. It looks to me like it is a photo of the Cubs infield from third to first (the player on the right is left handed). Here’s a wild shot in the dark: Phil Cavaretta as the first baseman? Cubs fan, please don’t laugh. It’s just a wild guess.
I like that thinking. Not sure if this helps, but I found a photo of a similar uniform (Chicago with the underline) on Woody English. So I think the team is from the late 20’s up to mid 30’s.

Hope that helps.
