APBA Collecting: What is this 1953 set worth?

I was contacted by Casey asking what a 1953 APBA baseball card set was worth.  Before going further, I needed to know what we were talking about.  Were we talking about an original 1953 or a reprint?  I know APBA had reprinted the 1953 season in 1985.  As some of you know, there is plenty of that kind of confusion on eBay.

No, Casey seemed to know what he was talking about and had assured me it was a vintage original set.  He says it is labeled as the 1954 edition with the 1953 cards.  The photos he sent later certainly look like they were from the era.  From what I tell from the photos the cards and envelopes look like they are in pretty decent shape.

I am not a APBA card set collector so I’m not an expert on what this kind of item will bring.  Does anyone have any idea what this 1953 original set might be worth?

It looks like the set had been used at least once since there was a filled-out score sheet.  Casey, who tells me he owns the set, says the set looks very unused otherwise.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I think that if all the cards are single column then it is certainly an original set and may be pretty valuable. Haven’t really kept up on pricing for a few years. Good luck.

  2. The cards are original based on the font type. Judging by the condition they should fetch at least a couple grand depending on who wants them bad enough. Would not be surprised if they go for a much higher number. Best of luck to whoever has them!

  3. I know Casey–if it’s the same Casey–is currently playing ’53 with Strat-O-Matic.

I love the old brown sacrifice booklet, with the tabs that make it so easy to find the page you need. I found mine recently, in an old desk drawer. I was stoked. I don’t like the one that came with the 1998 set, which is what I had been using.

  4. Maybe someone on this tie can help me. I was an avid APBA game player with friends and got interested in the game when I was around 11 years old back in 1954. I ordered many of the greatest past teams cards over the years and for some reason the entire 1949 season – all 16 teams. Am I correct in understanding that there are 2 markets for APBA team cards – originals and reprints? In this case, my 1949 season cards must be a reprint. Do they have any commercial value. I am about to retire and live in England and am downsizing so i plan to sell my APBA cards. Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks
