Boys of Summer League: Locos look forward to second half

It’s All-Star break in the Boys of Summer APBA Online League.  After the voting was tabulated, Adrian Beltre was tabbed as the lone Urbana Locomotive representative, a 180 degree difference from last year when we dominated.  To be fair, even I didn’t vote for any other Urbana player and I had three votes per position to use. Commissioner Shawn Baier has the All-Star previews of the NL team and of the AL team on his Boys of Summer website.

Despite that, we’re feeling pretty positive about the team… now.  The Locomotives got off to a horrendous start of the season.  As of the May 17th mark of the season, we sported a 10-30 win loss record.  We shook things up with a trade acquiring Yoenis Cespedes and brought up Jedd Gyorko and Tanner Roark from the minors.  Then things started to improve… a lot.

Since then, we’ve gone 25-22 and made significant improvements in team morale.  Granted, Tanner Roark has made a difference but his time is limited (2-1, 2.61 ERA).  Our main rotation of Price, Hamels and Kuroda are all tied with the team lead in wins with six.  Off-season acquisition Ubaldo Jimenez has had a rough season with a 2-11 record and a 6.18 ERA

Quite honestly, Cespedes has been a bit of a bust so far hitting .113 with two homers.  Gyorko is batting .246 but has four homers in just 69 at-bats.  We’ve made a decision to go with DJ LeMahieu as our main secondbaseman in favor of Aaron Hill.  Not only is DJ second on the team in hitting but he also provides spectacular fielding (2B-9).

But it’s Beltre who gets the nod for the All-Star Game and it’s well deserved.  Adrian is leading the team in homers (16), rbis (55), hitting (.286) runs (48), and hits (94).  He does it day in and day out.

Our record is 35-52 now and we’re still in last place but at least our wins are in the double digits.  Let’s go NL!!

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
