The Great APBA Fan Survey: Leagues

This is the fourth in the series of results of my Great APBA Fan Survey.  You can check out the results of the first three here.  Checking my spreadsheet, I think I have enough material for two more articles after this one (wow, lots of interesting stuff!).

Today, I’m looking at APBA leagues.  What kind of leagues and how you play in them.

One note about the numbers:  The percentages include everyone who took the survey and since not everyone answered the league questions, they won’t add up to 100%.  I probably could have handled that differently in the survey.

on to the results…

Do you play in an APBA League (competitively with others, not a replay)?

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 111 30.41%
No 250 68.49%
No answer 4 1.10%

Comments:  Again, this survey is showing that more people are solo players than I thought.

Are you in more than one league?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 43 11.88%
No 169 46.69%
No answer 150 41.44%

Comments:  …and if you are, you’re most likely in just one.  My max was two and that was just for a couple of years.

If you are in a league, how many teams are in your league (for those in multiple leagues, the league you are most involved in)?

image

Answer Count Percentage
under 5 10 2.74%
6-10 27 7.40%
11-20 67 18.36%
over 20 23 6.30%
No answer 238 65.21%

Comments:  Seems that the average league is in the 10-20 team range.

What type of League are you in? Face-to-Face, mail, over the network, or some sort of combination?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Face-to-Face League 41 10.25%
Mail League 39 9.75%
Network 18 4.50%
Combination 30 7.50%

Comments:  Pretty evenly spread out among the different genres.

What term best describes the kind of league you are in?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Current season, continuous ownership, draft league 97 24.25%
Current season using stock teams 3 0.75%
Retro league using stock teams 2 0.50%
Retro league, continuous ownership draft league 13 3.25%
None of these describe our league well. 12 3.00%

Comments:  I probably didn’t do a great job defining my terms here but we know that a high majority of leagues out there are current season and continuous ownership.  Glad to see some retro league representation, too.

In general, does your league(s) use modifications or is it mostly out of the box?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Our league uses a lot of modifications to the APBA Game 21 5.25%
Our league uses a few modifications to the game but not many 83 20.75%
Our league plays the game right out of box 22 5.50%

Comments:  Pretty solid bell curve here with the majority of leagues using a “few” modifications.

When drafting in your league, do like to pick players from your favorite MLB team?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Yes, it’s fun to have players who I already like 15 3.75%
Maybe.  All other things equal, I’ll probably go for them 48 12.00%
I only go for the best players for my team 70 17.50%

Comments: This was a fun question.  I voted for the last one but I’ll admit I drafted Tyler Colvin and Geovany Soto.  You can see where that got me.

The next post will deal with Buying, Selling and Collecting APBA products.

Thomas Nelshoppen

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
