The Fennessy Cup begins round two. The first game was another tough one for fans of the A’s as they yet again allowed an inferior opponent take control early and force a furious comeback.
The 1901 Orioles get a first inning run on a Mike Donlin double followed by a Jimmy Williams triple. Baltimore then expanded the lead on a ground out with runners on the corners to make it 2-0.
The 1905 A’s then got one run back on an error by Williams, and a Lafayette Cross sacrifice fly that tied the game in the bottom of the 4th. Pitching then took over. The Orioles then get a one out double by Frank Foutz to set the stage for pitcher Harry Howell, who has a pretty valuable card indeed. Harry comes through with a towering opposite field homer to give himself a 4-2 lead. The A’s get one run back on a Danny Hoffman single going to make it a one run game, and in the bottom of the 8th with two out the manager elects to keep the light hitting Eddie Plank who slips a 2 run single up the middle and suddenly the A’s are back on top 5-4.
The Orioles don’t go down quietly in the 9th though as they put runners on second and third when the third out is made and the A’s can breathe a sigh of relief. Their opponents in the Bracket Finals will be the 1905 Cincinnati Reds. They easily dispatched the 1905 Senators 4-0 as Orval Overall allowed just 5 hits.
