The North Bracket of the Fennessy Cup saw the top seeded 1905 A’s and Rube Waddell got a scare from the 1901 Cubs and Rube Waddell. The Cubs jumped on top early via an RBI single by Topsy Hartsel, and extended the lead to 3-0 in the second with a 2 RBI triple by Frank Chance.
The lead grew to 4-0 on a sacrifice by Charlie Dexter before the A’s finally showed up. Monte Cross hit an RBI triple to put the A’s on the board, and scored another on an error by Danny Green in the 6th. The Cubs got an insurance run in the 8th when Hartsel hit an RBI double, and in the bottom of the 9th when the Cubs looked like Cinderella, Philadelphia sent Topsy Hartsel to the plate and he reaches on an error by Dexter and the floodgates opened. With two outs 5 straight batters reach and as catcher Ossee Schreckengost hits a sac fly to score the winning run.
The next game was the 1905 Red Sox vs. the 1905 Senators. Cy Young, and Tom Hughes have a great duel and even though Hughes was very wild 6 BB the sens stun Boston 1-0 on a sac fly in the 5th.
Up next the 1901 Tigers faced the 1905 Reds. The Reds stun the Tigers with back to back doubles by Jim Seymour and Jimmy Sebring, and an error by Lewis McAllister to fall behind 2-0 early. Fritz Odwell hit the first HR of the tourney in the 8th to seal the 3-0 win as Bob Ewing pitched a 4 hitter.
The final game of this round in the bracket saw the 1905 Yankees face the 1901 Orioles. Pitching dominated as Joe McGinnity outlasted Al Orth in a 1-0 victory that saw little hitting by either team. McGinnity allowed just one hit and Orth just 2 in the loss. OUCH.
