1911 Ty Cobb has 23 runs scored in 8 games
Now that I’m back from vacation and I have my 30-game stats done for June for the IAL, it’s time to get back on track with the Monsters-Terribles season.
The Terribles did get two hits against formidable ‘08 Ed Walsh but ‘85 Matt Young was no match for the Monster hitting. Young only lasted 2/3 of an inning and gave up 12 runs. He was yanked after ‘30 “Buckethead” Simmons hit a grand slam.
After that, the Monsters offense quieted somewhat. The Terribles bullpen of ‘98 Darryl Kile, ‘34 Si Johnson and ‘07 Dontrelle Willis kept them to just six more runs in the remaining eight plus innings.
Walsh who got his second complete win of the season, gave up two hits and struck out six batters.

Monsters Highlights: The first seven Monsters batters scored in the first inning and all told twelve runs scored that inning helped by ‘30 Al Simmons grand slam. ‘30 Ty Cobb missed a cycle by a single and scored four runs. ‘ 22 Rogers Hornsby collected four hits including a homer and drove in four runs.
Terribles Highlights: ‘30 Chick Fullis and ‘34 Gerald McQuaig both banged out a single. ‘07 Dontrelle Willis gave up just one run in three innings.
Terrible Dice Roll: 33-13 on Chick Fullis in the 8th inning.
Around the dugout
After a couple days off, ‘22 Rogers Hornsby got a start and made it worth while. His four hits including a homerun in the second inning contributed to the Monsters win.
‘21 Babe Ruth and ‘11 Ty Cobb continue to dominate. Between the two, they had seven hits and two homers in game 8. Cobb scored four times and Ruth drove in four runs.
There was a little chiding of catcher ‘03 Javy Lopez who spelled Josh Gibson today. In the Monsters hitting spree against the Terribles, Lopez went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. Come on, Javee”, kidded ‘80 George Brett. “These guys are T-ballers”.
You know things are bad when you put ‘68 Ray Oyler in your lineup to spice up your offense. However, Oyler did walk in the bottom of the first to put away any thoughts of an Ed Walsh perfect game. Unfortunately he was immediately caught stealing. Some Terrible fans are wondering who made the call when the team was down 12-0. Rumor has it, Ray was acting on his own.
There was some hope that ‘85 Matt Young would hold off the Monsters. Young had a few good outings from the pen so Terribles management thought they give him a shot as a starter. It turned out he had one of the worst starts by a Terrible pitcher giving up 11 hits and 12 runs in 2/3 inning. That shoots his ERA up to 23.28 for the season almost as high as Darryl Kile’s 28.80 mark.
Next up
Game Nine will take place at Desperation Field before they switch ball fields again. ‘65 Jack Fisher and ‘68 Bob Gibson are the probable starters.
Hope you enjoyed your (well deserved) vacation. Man it must be fun to roll these games.

Glad you’re back and hope it was a ‘good one’ as we say here in Nova Scotia. That Cobb card looks like the one that was in w/ the ATA team all those years ago.How I loved it. A 55-10 to go with 4-0s, 4-31s and, of course, no 13s.
I’d love to know the math behind those 10 2nd column 2s but a 3 at 44….interesting for sure.
