After a short break for league drafts, I’m back at it again with the Terribles vs Monsters polling. This time we’re voting for the Monsters’ shortstop. More info on my project here, by the way.
In this poll, we have two 1980s shortstops sandwiched between a deadball era Hall of Famer and one from this century.
This one might be tough call.
Monsters Team nominee for Shortstop |
APBA card breakdown |
1900 Honus Wagner | SS-10, 0-0-0-0-0-7-8-8-8-9-9-11-11-10, three 14s |
1982 Robin Yount | SS-9, 1-3-5-6-6-7-8-8-9-9-10-10, three 14s |
1987 Alan Trammell | SS-9, 0-0-0-0-7-7-8-8-8-9-9-11, three 14s |
2000 Nomar Garciaparra | SS-9, 1-0-0-0-0-7-7-8-8-8-8-9-9, three 14s |
I’m making another exception for the Flyin’ Dutchman. I had his card in my Monster Card to-do folder but somehow never got around to getting it done. It didn’t seem right to do this without one the best shortstops of all time so I’m linking to his card.
Now’s your turn to vote!

For those wondering, 1978 Mike Fischlin won out for the privilege of representing the Terribles at shortstop. Nice win for Mike who was going up against infamous non-hitter Ray Oyler.
The rosters so far:
Terribles | Monsters | |
Catcher | 1967 Johnny Bench | 1931 Josh Gibson |
Firstbase | 2011 Adam Dunn | 1927 Lou Gehrig |
Secondbase | 1964 Joe Morgan | 1922 Rogers Hornsby |
Shortstop | 1978 Mike Fischlin | ???? |
Interesting that we have two HOFers plus a six-time 40+ HR slugger on the Terribles team already.
the dutchman all the way. a ss-10 to go w/ all those other monster cards and 5-0’s for fun…sweet.
Two 11’s and 10 don’t hurt.
As a lifelong fan of the Brewers, I have to throw my support behind one the Brew Crew’s greatest in his MVP year. Go Brewers!
While I would have loved to vote for Young, Wagner got my vote. In addition to 5 0’s and lots of speed a SS 10 AND 3B 5, AND 1B 4? The only SS 10’s I ever saw were Mark Belanger, Larry Bowa and Ozzie Smith. None of them ever hit like that.
I am sensing a really big crushing coming the Terribles way.
I think Luis Aparicio may have had a 10 back in the day.
Hate to vote against two of my favorites in Tram and Yount but 1900 Honus Wagner is the man. Wow!
Wow, it looks like someone stuffed the ballot box for Yount…haha.
He was definitely a great ball player though. I enjoyed those Brewer teams of the late ’70’s and early 80’s. I didn’t enjoy the butt kickings they gave the Pirates a few years ago.
