I am so ready to play my Terribles vs Monsters series, I can taste it! Three more polls to go.
Now, you get your chance to vote on the Monsters thirdbaseman. For a while, this position had been ignored by the Hall of Fame and had few inductees (that’s been somewhat corrected recently). I had a similar situation in my Monster Card selection. I didn’t have a lot to choose from.
The candidates I have chosen you will like, though. Three of the four are legitimate full time stars, too.
Monsters Team nominee for Thirdbaseman |
APBA card breakdown |
1930 Pie Traynor | 3B-6, 0-0-0-7-7-7-7-7-8-8-9-9-10, three 14s |
1980 George Brett | 3B-5, 1-3-5-6-6-7-7-8-8-8-8-9-9-11, four 14s |
1981 Mickey Klutts | 3B-4, 1-1-1-7-7-7-7-7-8-8-8-8-9-9, two 14s |
1994 Matt Williams | 3B-5, 1-1-1-0-0-8-8-8-9-9, two 14s |
As I write this, I already know who I’m voting for. Now’s your turn to vote!

I’m updating the starting rosters for both teams so far:
Terribles | Monsters | |
Catcher | 1967 Johnny Bench | 1931 Josh Gibson |
Firstbase | 2011 Adam Dunn | 1927 Lou Gehrig |
Secondbase | 1964 Joe Morgan | 1922 Rogers Hornsby |
Shortstop | 1978 Mike Fischlin | 1982 Robin Yount |
Thirdbase | 1905 Offa Neal | ???? |
Honus Wagner (42% of the vote) seemed to have it in the bag until Robin Yount (47%) made a last minute comeback. No doubt, Wagner will make it as a sub.
Scott Fennessy who has had plenty of experience with Offa Neal in his 1905 replay is consoling me since I’ll have to now start him at third. Neal has hit numbers 7-8-9 with a 22-13.
Well there is not really a bad choice here, and I have to say I am surprised there was no Mike Schmidt card here, but while I almost voted for Traynor and his no 13 card, but Brett was one of my all time favorites and I still remember spending the summer with my grandparents in Missouri that year and the sports updates ALWAYS started with the George Brett update before the actual game results. So I voted for Brett.
Voted for Williams since you can see the stats on his card and they look pretty good. Never could understand How to tell who is best when they just give a few certain numbers.
APBA recently announced they will be reprinting all the cards for every season, and going forward they will all have the stats so you won’t be in the dark any loner.
That said Brett flirted with .400 into August and had solid numbers all around. I am fairly familiar with Traynor’s work. Klutts was really the product of very limited at bats.
How the heck did Mickey Klutts get only 1 vote? I would rate him 1a or 2 out of all the players to choose from. I voted for George Brett only because Mickey Klutts’s KOs were a little too high to allow me to put him ahead of George Brett.
I think it is still early in the voting at this point. That said, Brett’s card more than enough power with the addition of the speed number as well.
