The Dodgers come to town today and they are still horrible. That said they have put some underperformers on the bench and the new lineup is showing better results of late. Bob Scanlan goes for the bums today. He is 6-20 coming in, but has an ERA in the low 3.00 range, and has been the victim of their horrible defense and weak hitting for sure. He goes against Ed Reulbach.
This turned out to be arguably the better pitcher’s duel of the season. Neither team had gotten a hit until Frank Chance slips a soft single into center field with two out in the 4th. He steals second, but is stranded there.
Reulbach lost his no hit bid with a two out single by Jimmy Sheckard, who leads the team in most batting categories, so it was no surprise that he was the one to get a hit. The pitching shutdown continued until the Cubs finally broke through in the 7th. Frank Schulte led off the inning with a solid single to left. Chance then gets his second hit of the day, and his second steal shortly after. Jim Casey comes through with a two RBI single on an 0-2 fastball , and had taken second on a ground out. Joe Tinker then extended his hitting streak to 5 games with an RBI single. Scanlan finally recovered and stopped the rally, but the home team now has a 3-0 lead.
And that was the ball game. Reulbach finished with a 1 hit shutout. He walked one and struck out 6. Scanlan did not pitch poorly, but simply ran out of steam in the 7th.
