The Cubs homestand continues today with the struggling Braves playing the Cubs. The Cardinals recent lineup changes have produced their first win streak of significance and the Braves have dropped into 7th place, and although they are comfortably ahead of the putrid Dodgers. Irv Young (left) who is easily the best player on this team goes against Mordecai Brown.
This was a pitching gem for both teams. While Brown was wild for the second straight game he only allowed just two runs in the second. Unfortunately Young was even better allowing just 1 run in the second for a 2-1 Braves victory. Boston should have crushed them as Brown walked 4 and although only 5 hits they all came in groups, and had Brown not toughened up at times to keep it close. Struggling Fred Tenney had two doubles and Tom Needham returned from a very long stay on the DL and went 1 for 3 with a walk and scored the first run of the day. Reserve Bill Lauterborn subbing for the injured Harry Wolverton hit the game winning 2 RBI triple.
Irv Young allowed 6 hits and they had another chance with two out and two on in the third but that was it. Frank Schulte now has hits in 4 of his last 6 games and is now at .281. Johnny KIing now has a 6 game hitting streak and rises to .210 Doc Casey extended his hit streak to 3 games and is at .198 but was injured and will be out for one game. Hans Lobert went 1 for 2 as his replacement. Despite only having a 0-6, 0-6 card he is has 5 RBI in 1 games, all in the number 8 slot. The Braves pass the Cardinals again.
Cubs 30 8 .789
Giants 27 9 .750
