I have already written a bit about Juan Marichal’s performance in June. However, it wasn’t until I calculated the monthly stats for all the players when I realized how dominating he was for the San Francisco Giants.
Marichal started seven times in June… and won all seven, leading the NL for June. Juan almost won half of his Giants fifteen games in June! Of those seven wins, he collected four shutouts. On top of that, he only allowed earned runs in just two starts. His six earned runs in 61 1/3 innings figure out to a miniscule 0.88 ERA second only to Chris Short’s 0.83 mark.
Pitcher | Marichal, Juan |

SO | 71 |

ERA | 0.88 |
In addition, he led the league in strikeouts with 71, nineteen more than second place Sandy Koufax. His mark of 10.4 K/9 IP led the NL for June as well.
And as June ended, something happened for the first time. A pitcher landed on Hitters Leaders page. Marichal has hit in four straight games which currently good for the sixth highest current streak.
Honorable Mentions
- ATL’s Denny Lemaster went 6-0 with a 0.90 ERA (note: Lemaster is a CX).
- PIT’s Vern Law went 6-0 with a 1.26 ERA. Note: both Law and Marichal pitched a shutout to end the month and now have a season 1.30 ERA. Marichal’s is slightly lower at 1.296.
- PHI’s Chris Short who had the best ERA in the NL for the month should be listed, I guess. Philly’s defense didn’t help him as he just as many unearned runs and he could only muster a 3-2 record.
